ALL THE WORLD AND ACCADEMIA ITALIANA
CELEBRATE ST. MATTHEW
A wonderful event takes place in Salerno every year on 21st September: all the
inhabitants celebrate St. Matthew (one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus and
one of the 4 Evangelists), patron Saint of the city, with a folklore
parade in which the silver statue of the Saint goes through the streets of
the ancient city centre,
accompanied by other statues of Saints and Martyrs.
The procession starts from the Cathedral of Salerno, one of the most beautiful churches of the Southern Italy, where St. Matthew’s relics are preserved, and it passes by the school building, where students can enjoy the feast all together from the balconies.
After the religious celebrations, an entertaining party with rides, markets and fireworks on the sea begins!
